Over 1 billion Apps were downloaded from AppStore

April 24th, 2009

Apple’s front page is now announcing that the App Store has reached one billion downloads. For the past two weeks, Apple has been running a 1 Billion App Countdown promotion, offering a package of Apple prizes valued at over $13,000 for the “entry (either through an app download or through the non-purchase online entry) sent immediately following the download of the 999,999,999th app.” The competition is now closed, and the winner will be publicly announced in the near future.

A number of Apple pages, including the main apple.com page, countdown promotion page, iPod+iTunes page, iTunes Store, and App Store have been displaying counters reflecting the approaching milestone.

Apple revealed yesterday that they had sold 37 million iPhones and iPod Touches. The latest App Store application count is over 35,000.

Users can share photos, emoticons and links through the service. Yahoo has posted a video preview of the app (after the break).

SlingBox’s SlingPlayer submitted to AppStore

March 27th, 2009

Back at MacWorld, we chatted with the guys over at SlingMedia about their upcoming plans for an iPhone release of their SlingPlayer.

They’ve just announced they’ve submitted the app to the AppStore, and we’re all now just waiting for approval. We’ve learned by now that Apple’s approval process is about as predictable as the next episode of LOST, but here’s hoping the app will be approved within the week or so.

I know I’ve been excited about shredding through some 3G network to catch up on 24 while I’m away from home.

For those of you who don’t know - SlingMedia retails the SlingBox, a device which lets you watch your DVR and cable TV from any browser on supported platforms (including OS X and Windows, sure) and many smart phones as well.

New Problem To The App Store: Copycat Apps

March 27th, 2009

Click the image to open in full size.

There seems to be a new problem within the App Store that has developers up in arms. Copycat apps are ripping off functionality and passing Apple’s approval.
Developers are horrified at the prospect of others knocking off their work and selling it for much cheaper or giving it away for no cost. It’s not hard to view the contents of iPhone App file and strip sounds and images to reuse in the knockoff App. Apple seems to be furthering the problem by approving these Apps and not checking if other Apps already available duplicate the functionality an App in submission. Arstechnica summarizes the problem: The problem isnt just that these copycats are similar in concept or execution, but that they directly copy artwork, product descriptions, icons, and names, though sometimes the name or artwork is slightly modified. Its relatively trivial to get inside a .ipa bundle and copy the artwork, as in the case of Touch Scan Pro, a nearly identical copy of Touch Scan.
