Apple removed two iPhone applications from its App Store that allegedly infringed on the trademark of Cartier International, according to the Wall Street Journal. The move came just one day after the French jeweler and watchmaker filed the suit against Apple for distributing the free iPhone application Fake Watch and selling a premium Fake Watch Gold Edition. Both apps told time with look-alike famous wrist watches, including Cartier’s Tank watch.
In response to the removal of the iPhone apps, Cartier withdrew its lawsuit.
Apple didn’t return either a voice mail or e-mail request for comment.

Apple’s front page is now announcing that the App Store has reached one billion downloads. For the past two weeks, Apple has been running a 1 Billion App Countdown promotion, offering a package of Apple prizes valued at over $13,000 for the “entry (either through an app download or through the non-purchase online entry) sent immediately following the download of the 999,999,999th app.” The competition is now closed, and the winner will be publicly announced in the near future.
A number of Apple pages, including the main apple.com page, countdown promotion page, iPod+iTunes page, iTunes Store, and App Store have been displaying counters reflecting the approaching milestone.
Apple revealed yesterday that they had sold 37 million iPhones and iPod Touches. The latest App Store application count is over 35,000.

Every so often a free app comes along for the iPhone/ iPod touch that I think everyone should have. That certainly applies to Dictionary.com [App Store link]. It’s an iPhone version of the Dictionary.com web site which gives you definitions, a thesaurus, audio pronunciations, and my favorite, word origins. (I was interested to learn that the word ‘waver’ goes back to the 13th century German word for moving about. I love stuff like that.) The app also provides a word of the day, and examples of your specified word in sentences. Read the rest of this entry »

Touch Mix is a simple music app for the iPhone and iPod touch that lets you play, mix, and remix ten exclusive tracks by producer deadmau5. Now, of course, you’re unlikely to grab this in order to DJ nothing but deadmau5. (The all-deadmau5, all-the-time approach?) But the app demonstrates that iPhone-only artist releases can be a whole lot more fun than just a few tracks and some static album artwork. And it also shows off what a handheld DJ interface could look like, with a pretty efficient one-screen-per-deck design that doesn’t overwhelm your fingertips.
