iTunes was updated on 9.0.3

February 2nd, 2010

Apple has just pushed out an update to iTunes, which brings the software to version 9.0.3. It still looks and acts the same as 9.0.2, but it does come with several bug fixes and improvements:

iTunes no longer ignores your “Remember password for purchases” setting.
Addresses problems with syncing some Smart Playlists and Podcasts with iPod.
Resolves a problem recognizing when iPod is connected.
Addresses issues that affect stability and performance.
We’re also guessing that the new version probably has a few references to the iPad, so all you tinkerers better get to it! The update is available via Software Update and at Apple.com.

Apple announced their new device - iPad

January 28th, 2010

Yesterday Apple announced their highly anticipated tablet, dubbed the iPad. It’ll be available in 60 days and it comes in several size configurations, with the 16GB base-model costing $499. It includes 802.11n wireless networking, a 9.7″ multi-touch screen, speakers, microphone, Bluetooth, accelerometer, and compass. It appears to run a modified version of the iPhone OS, presumably iPhone OS 3.2. It’ll run current iPhone apps without modification, although an SDK has been announced to build native apps. Additionally, Apple will roll out a WiFi+3G model which will include 3G connectivity and GPS. The WiFi+3G model will cost an additional $130, although it’ll be unlocked and service will cost $15 for 250MB of bandwidth per month or $30 for unlimited data. 3G will be provided by AT&T in the states with no contract.

Apple iPad will be available on March 1st via Media Mark

January 27th, 2010

According to a (now deleted) tweet by major German electronics retailer Media Markt, the Apple iPad will go on sale March 1st at a price of 499 Euros (~$700) with T-Mobile contract or 899 Euros (~$1200) without. In the US prices would likely be around $500-$600 with contract and $999 without. These numbers were calculated comparing Apple items sold in Euros and USD (Mac Mini: 549 Euros / $599 USD, MacBook 899 Euros / $999 USD).

The company, however, quickly deleted the tweet but not before it was retweeted a number of times.

Apple Tablet may be in March or April

December 10th, 2009

Citing his investigation into Apple’s supply chain, analyst Yair Reiner claims that Apple will ramp up production of thewonderdevice in February 2010. His date for the Second Coming of the JesusTablet: March or April. And apparently, it’ll kill Kindle.

He says that Apple is offering 30/70 revenue split to book publishers. That’s 30% for Apple, and 70% for publishers for a non-exclusive distribution contract. Amazon—who apparently has pissed off everyone in the book industry—only offers 30/70 for exclusives, and 50/50 for the rest. He claims that the Apple device will make “ebooks more relevant for education by simplifying functions such as scribbling marginalia.” Read the rest of this entry »

Apple and Cartier Resolve Legal Tussle Over iPhone App

May 25th, 2009

Apple removed two iPhone applications from its App Store that allegedly infringed on the trademark of Cartier International, according to the Wall Street Journal. The move came just one day after the French jeweler and watchmaker filed the suit against Apple for distributing the free iPhone application Fake Watch and selling a premium Fake Watch Gold Edition. Both apps told time with look-alike famous wrist watches, including Cartier’s Tank watch.

In response to the removal of the iPhone apps, Cartier withdrew its lawsuit.

Apple didn’t return either a voice mail or e-mail request for comment.

The brouhaha tarnishes yet again Apple’s mobile software approval process which has been a source of criticism by developers and consumers. Apple got into trouble from child’s right activists a few weeks ago over the baby shaking game incident

Apple Aiming for $500 to $700 10 in. Tablet in 2010?

May 22nd, 2009

The infamous Apple tablet may reach consumers as early as 2010 if Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has analyzed things correctly. It is predicted that the tablet might appear in the first half of 2010, have a 7-10 inch screen (remember the 9 in. iPod rumor), have 3g capability, and cost $500 - $700 thanks to cellular carrier subsidization.

In a research note to clients Munster and his team wrote “Between indications from our component contacts in Asia, recent patents relating to multi-touch sensitivity for more complex computing devices, comments from [chief operating officer] Tim Cook on the April 22nd conference call, and Apple’s acquisition of P.A. Semi along with other recent chip-related hires, it is increasingly clear that Apple is investing more in its mobile computing franchise.”

Unconfirmed: Apple Orders 100 Million 8GB Chips for New Handhelds

April 10th, 2009

DigiTimes is reporting that Apple has placed a massive order for 100 million 8GB flash storage chips, mostly from Samsung, that will then be combined into larger capacities. What could this purchase indicate? The quantity, twice the size of last year’s order, is likely to make such chips scarce in the market, which could hurt competitors like Nokia and Sony. It’s a pretty plausible rumor, as far as rumors go: Apple will probably announce new flash-based handhelds, especially the iPhone and iPod touch updates, in June, which isn’t far off. It’s a big increase, but if Apple is introducing, say, a larger version, that’ll use a lot more of the 8GB chips than smaller capacities. We’re filing this one under “Probable.”
