Nice. Booted up on my 3GS in about 4-6 minutes (but in safe mode, so perhaps that’s a bit longer than it normally is)

Any way to bring up a keyboard of some sort? The Win95 image doesn’t appear to have come with the on-screen keyboard.

How did you get it booted up because it’s not in cydia for me and I can’t figure out the .deb installation

Pavel Egorkin

For now emulator does not have keyboard and iWert does not have free time to make it. May be in future.

@jj

Transfer the .deb file to your device’s /tmp folder by SSH/SFTP

Login via SSH and use the following command:

dpkg -i /tmp/bochs.deb

Wait for it to return to the prompt, then respring and you’ll see the Bochs icon fill up the first available space on your home screens. It looks like a box.

@Pavel

How do you double-click or right-click? I keep randomly tapping around trying to figure out the gestures for each, but it seems I do one when I’m trying to do the other, and I can’t quite pinpoint it. Only thing I have managed to get down pat is single-clicking (menus, buttons…)

Is there any chance Bochs could run nicer if the project was compiled for the ARMv7 architecture on the Cortex A8 in the 3GS?

Overall, thanks for this fun bit of nostalgia, guys :)

@fury
i get an error everytime i enter the command in terminal what is it supposed to say
thanks for the help

It will generally say something like this:

Dennis-Fields-iPhone:/tmp root# dpkg -i /tmp/bochs.deb
Selecting previously deselected package com.isoftru.bochs.
(Reading database … 1247 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking com.isoftru.bochs (from /tmp/bochs.deb) …
Setting up com.isoftru.bochs (1.0.0-1) …
Dennis-Fields-iPhone:/tmp root#

Depends on what error you get. Make sure you’re putting the bochs.deb you got from RapidShare in /tmp and not extracting any contents of the .deb file. dpkg works on .deb files.

What should the command output when the installation is complete ? I have a bochs icon on my springboard and I’m booting windows 95 right now (btw, whats that win 3.1 doing there ?).

But I wonder what the right output would be…

Also I use this SSH profile settings:

Host Name: 192.168.178.32
Port Number: 22
Username: root
Password: alpine
File Protocol: SCP

and used the settings given above aswell as these instrucitons:

If you’re getting an error number, then there’s something wrong with the package file.

Paste the error you get after you enter the command in the terminal.

22 July 2009, 4:49 am
jj

@BigAl
where did you put the .deb and what did you type in on mobile terminal

22 July 2009, 5:10 am
jj

@fury
it says the command failed with return code 1 and error message dpkg: error processing /tmp/bochs.deb (-install) cannot access archive. no such file or directory errors were encountered while proccessing /tmp/bochs.deb

22 July 2009, 1:55 pm
fury

@jj then your file is not in /tmp

Did you place the file on the iPhone using SFTP? You have to do that before the iPhone can access the package. It cannot access a package that is only on your computer.

Use an SFTP client like FileZilla for Mac or WinSCP for Windows. Set up a “site” in the SFTP client using your iPhone’s IP as the server address, SFTP as the protocol (Secure FTP, aka FTP over SSH2), root as the user, and alpine as the password.

Connect, then go up to the root (hit Parent Directory or .. until you don’t see that anymore), and then find the tmp folder, open it up, and place bochs.deb in there. Then the command will work.

22 July 2009, 2:41 pm
jj

Yeah I’m using winscp and when I put it into the tmp folder it turns into blochs.deb.Ink

22 July 2009, 4:16 pm
jj

if i try to use mobile terminal it says an error has occured while proccessing /tmp/blochs.deb

@jj there’s your problem. You only have a shortcut on your desktop, and when you drag that shortcut, you’re only putting a small shortcut file that says where it is on your computer. You need to drag the actual file there - from where it saved to your computer. Just download it again if you don’t remember where the file saved.

the most easy way to install “deb” file in your iPhone (without using Terminal):

Navigate to var/root/Media/ on your device using SSH or whatever,
Make a new folder called “Cydia” then, create another new folder inside of the Cydia folder called “AutoInstall”. Drop the .deb file inside of the AutoInstall folder.

next

So the .deb file should now be on your device and be located at var/root/Media/Cydia/AutoInstall/blabla…deb

Now turn off your device, turn it back on and REBOOT again TWO TIMES for it to activate.
